LAU Youth Leadership Program

With the motto “Youth Teach Youth,” the LAU Youth Leadership Program is an initiative developed by the Outreach and Civic Engagement division at LAU.

Studies have shown that the ideal age for leadership training and for unleashing the innovative potential of youth is between 12 and 14 years of age. During this age range, youth are more susceptible and inclined to internalize leadership training and the characteristics needed to cultivate a culture of peace, innovation, and communication. Inspired by these findings, this program targets Grade 7 and 8 students from both public and private schools.

The program aspires to enable youth to become leaders of tomorrow by becoming active participants and agents of change in Lebanese society. Participating students are trained by LAU student leaders who have undergone extensive training and embody leadership traits.

Interactive training introduces students to key leadership qualities such as verbal and non-verbal communication skills and problem solving. The program challenges students’ perceptions on the meaning of leadership, and sheds light on the importance of humility, teamwork, character building and learning.

The program aims to raise awareness among youth that everyone has the potential to be a leader within their own community, and that leadership is not only a part of a political setting or domain. By awakening the leader in students, the program inspires them to work towards developing the leader within them.

This year, the Outreach and Civic Engagement division partnered with Al Safadi Foundation to bring this program to 136 students from 27 schools in Tripoli and 103 students from 25 schools in Saida.

Furthermore the OCE planned a workshop with the Bishop Philippe Shebaya Foundation in Bsharre in February, 2011. The OCE also plans to hold a workshop in Baakline at the Shouf National College during March 2011.
